Dear Valued Member,

On June 1, 2020, Governor Baker signed an Executive Order announcing that beginning Monday, June 8th, Massachusetts SHOULD be entering and allowed to function under the Phase II portion of the COVID-19 Reopening Plan. This means ‘retail’ businesses will be allowed to open on a modified/reduced capacity; not just essential businesses like Worcester Credit Union has been and continues to be.

In considering how to handle this phase’s options for reopening much thought and care has contributed to our approach such as input and insight from community leaders, our regulators, local and national government leaders and medical experts; as well as the information and restrictions outlined in the Governor’s Phase II itself. In anticipation of our ability to reopen, we have begun preparing our lobby for your return with the needed materials to effectively and safely reopen the lobby and meet the required/ best practices identified in the industry and locally here in Worcester. At this time, some items are still pending delivery as we are at the mercy of the suppliers like everyone else trying to restart their businesses here in the Commonwealth. Now, in addition to the COVID-19 reopening phases, we are faced with the current unrest in our community. Large gatherings for peaceful protests and awareness throughout our region brings the potential risk of beginning a new surge in COVID-19 cases. If that does happen, it would make the health data trend in the wrong direction forcing a halt and pull back of the reopening phases of the Governor’s plan. I would hate to reopen the lobby only to turn around and close it again within a week or two if that does happen as leaders and medical experts have stated may occur.

In consideration of all factors at this time, ‘reopening’ the lobby and managing entry to the facility on a limited capacity due to our location size and layout plus the necessary infrastructure modifications and additional sanitizing requirements is not feasible. Currently, it makes more sense to continue servicing day to day business needs via drive up, telephone, electronically or by appointment when needed. Although disappointing because we are anxious to welcome you back in person and get this COVID-19 crisis behind us. However, the health and safety of you, our valued members as well as the dedicated employees of Worcester CU are our top concern and reopening the lobby just yet is not prudent.

In the meantime, we are actively preparing our lobby to provide a safe environment for you and our staff when we do reopen. Steps being taken include:

  • Enhanced cleaning and sanitization methods have been incorporated into our regular daily and weekly schedule
  • The installation of social distancing enhancements such as floor decals to help employees and customers maintain social distancing to keep 6 ft apart
  • Limiting the number of customers in the branch at one time
  • Providing hand sanitizer stations at the entrance, common areas and ATM
  • Requiring all members to wear masks prior to entering the Credit Union
  • Providing all staff Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – masks, gloves, tissues, and hand sanitizer
  • Allowing front line staff regular handwashing breaks and ensuring availability to wipes to sanitize frequently touched surfaces

We will continue to monitor and assess the situation and keep you updated on our reopening phases as we move through these unchartered waters. Be safe and well.

Warm regards,

Lisa A. Perrin
